Prayer Groups

  • W.I.G.S. reads best-selling secular novels and delves into the message that God may have within the pages. Members engage in discussion and fellowship with other Christian readers for a fun and meaningful literary/spiritual experience.

  • Sisters in the Spirit is an informal small group for women that reads and discusses books based on faith topics.

  • Men's Bible Studies are smaller in size and currently there are two groups. The morning group is a book discussion and the evening is Bible study/covenant model.

  • Prayer Shawl knitters and those who want to learn gather monthly to knit and pray together as they make prayer shawls to be given to persons to express love and support from our church in a time of illness, grief, or other life difficulty.

  • United Methodist Women is a vital ministry at WMC with monthly circles and small groups for all ages with day and evening options. UMW supports mission programs for women and children locally, in the U.S., and around the world. Close friendships and support are a benefit of participation in UMW.

  • Laity in Prayer meets Sundays at 8:00 a.m. to pray for the community of faith as it prepares to gather for worship, learning, and serving.

  • Partners in Prayer is an intercessory prayer group that prays for specific concerns of members of the community of faith.

As a church, we value the wide range of generations and try to create programs designed to give each age group the most value for their needs. West Market Church has a vibrant Older Adult membership and plans many special events and regular opportunities for that demographic to keep them engaged with the church and one another.

The purpose of our Older Adult Ministry is to provide a forum for information sharing, fellowship, spiritual growth, and advocacy in the church and community. The Ministry Team advocates for Older Adults and plans numerous events and activities.

Worship Enhancement:  Our clergy share in the presentation of worship experiences at several area nursing homes on a monthly basis. We are developing a monthly schedule of Holy Communion at each of the retirement and assisted living centers for those who cannot come to church.

Annual Heritage Sunday Worship Service celebrates our Older Adult members and is followed by a fellowship luncheon.

  • Friendship Club luncheons with guest speakers who presentations ranged from health and exercise to gardening, magic and the weather. Occasional day trips are planned to nearby points of interest. Reservations are necessary.

  • Monthly Singles Mingles Dinner Group

  • Walking Group which meets Tuesday mornings at 10:30

  • Opportunities for Spiritual Growth through the Festival of Wisdom and Grace and other study groups

  • Support for Senior Wheels, which assists older adults with transportation to medical appointments

  • Support of Shepherd Center and its various ministries

  • Birthday cards sent to our homebound, nursing home and especially our 90+ year old members.

Shepherd Center Greensboro

An interfaith organization of older adults helping older adults in the Greensboro community, has its office at West Market Street Church. Retirement age men and women who wish to use their time, talents, and experience in positive ways are encouraged to get involved. The Center empowers older adults through educational programs and service projects that enrich and support independent living and active community building. Opportunities for learning, service, fellowship, and enrichment make this a vital program for older adults. In addition to participating in the educational and service programs, many WMSUMC older adults volunteer through the Shepherd's Center.
